Travel Anxiety and Resources

As part of Autism Month, our students are sharing their thoughts on their experiences.
Anton, a young adult student states:
"I was terrified about an airplane trip because of how people would respond to me and that I could be arrested just for being myself. That fear creates worse impulsivity and more issues. Luckily we got support and it went smoothly. Appropriate support allows me greater independence and access to society.
It should be autism understanding month. Society is aware of autism and even generally accepts it, but does not understand it. I do not just want to be given space to be judged and on my own. I want support to do my best and that requires understanding."
If you or your child are concerned about security when flying, we recommend going through the steps in a lesson and practicing anything challenging in advance.
Here are some additional resources to make travel easier:
- Prior to travel, you can sign up for the Wings For All program at Dulles or see if your airport has a similar program.
- Most airports and airlines recognize the Sunflower Project to signal hidden disabilities. You can order lanyards or find local vendors that distribute them.
- Closer to your flight, contact TSA cares to provide support through security on your trip.
