Student Post: Summer Revelation

Many of our students take the summer off to go to camps or travel with family. The end of August is a major transition for our team as schools restart at different times and our own Fall programs begin as well.

We always start a session gauging readiness so we can balance the 4 goals of every session. Sarah D began her first session back with a request to write so the main goal was communication with skills and tolerance as we are able.

Here is her poem:

Summer Revelation

The summer flew by.

Time spent without:

  • busy city traffic

  • different groups

  • communication

Less stress, but also stressful.

Apprehension and anxiety,

but also respite for all.

Time spent with

  • safe environment

  • trusted caregivers

  • peers to be social

Nothing bad or traumatic

I hate how my brain and body respond.

I wish it felt safe.

I despise the drama,

unreasonability,

and reality that is my anxiety.

But it is real.

No mental gymnastics can make me fireproof.

And my world is always on fire.

Breathing is temporary,

Then seems to fan the flames.

This was my summer revelation.

She asks the community "What was your revelation?"

Of course, not everyone needs to or will have a summer revelation, but we found this metaphor of anxiety and a world on fire enlightening.
